When it comes to mounting your new truck topper most will be installed without the use of drills. A truck topper that is improperly installed will rattle and squeak and generally drive you crazy as you drive down the road. While some installers use foam tape to seal the bed, it is best to use a manufacturer who uses weather stripping to ensure that you get a superior seal and less rubbing of the topper against the pickup bed. The best mounting is unobtrusive clamp mechanisms which are hidden from sight.
Most fiberglass truck toppers will pass the durability test. Look for the thickness of the product and some form of reinforcement as your guide to how durable the product will be. You will get a much more durable product with a cloth/fiberglass or resin coated honeycomb reinforcement than you will with cardboard which is used by some manufacturers.
One good indication of a high quality product is the use of hardware which which integrated into the product, rather than hardware which must be riveted or screwed to the fiberglass. High quality truck toppers have the hardware laminated into the product. One of the key places to look for high quality hardware is the hinges. They should work smoothly and look solid.
Another key element of your truck topper to investigate is the locking mechanism. The most secure way of securing your truck topper is with stainless steel locking rods. Some companies will use rotary latches, but make sure these types utilize galvanized cables.
